BYOT

Indian Prairie School District
Bring Your Own Technology

As we enter into an age of new technologies and learning strategies, positive educational benefits can provide enhancements to the learning environment. Indian Prairie School District 204 is committed to promoting students and staff in a true 21st Century learning environment. We will teach the skills, knowledge and behaviors students will need as responsible citizens in a global community. Students learn collaboration, communication, creativity and critical thinking in a variety of methods during their school career.

In an effort to increase opportunities to use these 21st century skills, Indian Prairie School District will allow students in classrooms at your child’s school to “Bring Your Own Technology” to access the BYOT Guest Network during the school day under direct supervision of the classroom teacher. Parents have signed permission forms while completing their school registration forms.

Definition of Devices:
A device includes, but not limited to, the following:
● Notebooks/Netbooks
● Tablet Computer (s)
● iPads, iPods, iPhones, smart phones

All devices must be clearly labeled with the student’s full name. Families are encouraged to register their personal device with the local police department. Thefts of electronic devices on school grounds should be reported to administration as soon as possible. Administration will work with the School Resource Officer or police department to file a report and investigate. However, ultimately the school is not responsible for lost or stolen property, so students should take extreme care when having valuable items in their possession.

Network Considerations:
All Students must use the BYOT Guest Wireless network while using their device in the classroom. Student filtering guidelines are a requirement of all public schools in compliance with Federal Law. The Children’s Internet Privacy Act (CIPA) requires that all network access in schools be filtered, regardless of the tool used to access the internet while in a public school. Students are prohibited from connecting to a private, unfiltered network connection on their device using a data plan. IPSD is not held responsible for any charges incurred while using the device during classroom activities.

Classroom Guidelines:
With classroom teacher approval, students may use their own devices to access and save information from the internet or district owned database subscriptions, communicate with the teacher or other classroom learners, and use productivity tools that may be currently loaded on the student device. Students may use these devices in the classroom when the teacher deems them appropriate for educational purposes.

Student Guidelines:
● Students participating in the IPSD Bring Your Own Device classroom must adhere to the
guidelines set forth in the School Student Handbook, IPSD Student Acceptable Use Policy, and all Board policies.
● Each classroom teacher participating in BYOT has the discretion to allow and regulate the use of personal devices in the classroom and on specific assignments.
● Students may not use the device for non instructional purposes such as making personal phone calls, text or instant messaging, or to compromise the integrity of a test, quiz or assignment.
● Devices may only be used to access information which is relevant to the classroom learning.
● Devices must be on silent mode while on school campus or school transportation.
● Devices must not be used to record, transmit or post photographic images or video of a person, or persons on campus during school activities and/or hours.

Student and Parent/Guardians acknowledge that:
● Internet connectivity on a device will be filtered by the Indian Prairie School District and any attempt to bypass the network filters is prohibited. No access to a 3G or 4G network is permitted.
● Students are prohibited from bringing a device that infects the school network with any program designed to damage or compromise the school network and its contents. IPSD reserves the right to collect and examine any device that is suspected of causing technology problems at school.
● Printing from a personal device will not be allowed at school.
● All devices must be charged prior to school and run exclusively on battery power while used in the classroom environment. Only in extreme circumstances should a teacher allow a student to charge their device in a classroom.
● Certain applications may not display correctly depending on the device.
● Using his/her own device to transmit or share inappropriate content during the school day will result in loss of BYOT privileges. Additional consequences may be applied based upon the circumstances and will be investigated by school personnel.
● Transmission of material of bullying nature or sexual nature will not be tolerated.
● Using the device outside of the classroom is strictly prohibited. The purpose of BYOT is purely for the extension and enrichment of the learning environment in a classroom under the supervision of a classroom teacher.
